Quadrants & Plotting Points

Master the Four Quadrants (I, II, III, IV), signs of coordinates, identifying points on coordinate axes, and plotting (x, y).

01 · THE FOUR QUADRANTS

Signs in Four Quadrants

The coordinate axes divide the Cartesian plane into 4 equal regions called Quadrants:

QUADRANT SIGNS

Sign Conventions

• Quadrant I (top right): x > 0, y > 0  ⟹ (+, +) e.g. (3, 5)

• Quadrant II (top left): x < 0, y > 0  ⟹ (-, +) e.g. (-2, 4)

• Quadrant III (bottom left): x < 0, y < 0  ⟹ (-, -) e.g. (-3, -5)

• Quadrant IV (bottom right): x > 0, y < 0  ⟹ (+, -) e.g. (4, -2)

02 · POINTS ON AXES

Coordinates of Points on Axes

• Any point lying on the X-axis has y-coordinate 0: (x, 0).
• Any point lying on the Y-axis has x-coordinate 0: (0, y).
• The Origin has coordinates (0, 0).
