LESSON 02 · CLASS 9 MATHEMATICS (NCERT)

Graph of a Linear Equation in Two Variables

Master plotting linear equations as straight lines on the Cartesian plane, equations of lines parallel to X-axis and Y-axis, and real-world graphs.

01 · GRAPH REPRESENTATION

Straight Line Graph

The geometrical representation of every linear equation in two variables is a straight line. Every point (x, y) on the line satisfies the equation.

STEPS TO DRAW GRAPH

Graphing Procedure

1. Express y in terms of x: y = (c - ax) / b.

2. Choose at least 3 values of x and calculate corresponding values of y to form coordinate pairs (x, y).

3. Plot the coordinate points on a Cartesian graph sheet.

4. Join the points with a ruler to draw the continuous straight line.

02 · LINES PARALLEL TO AXES

Equations of Lines Parallel to Axes

SPECIAL LINES

x = a and y = b

• Equation of X-axis: y = 0

• Equation of Y-axis: x = 0

• Line Parallel to X-axis: y = k (or y = b)

• Line Parallel to Y-axis: x = k (or x = a)
